The Sweet Life: a Sweet Find

February 14, 2010

For Valentine’s Day, Keith took me out to dinner at 10 Downing. In return, I got him chocolate. Clearly it was an even exchange, especially given that he doesn’t really like chocolate…

Hand-made chocolate beats Godiva any day.

But I found a little store in the Lower East Side called The Sweet Life and we went this afternoon to check it out. It’s been in the neighborhood since 1982, and it is the epitome of “mom-and-pop candy store.” There was a wall of jelly beans, gumballs the size of my head and every type of dried fruit dipped in chocolate imaginable.

Remarkably, they make most of the chocolate by hand in the back of the store. We bought the sea salt caramels, butter toffee crunch and dark chocolate chipotle caramels. It was relatively inexpensive too — $12 for 12 pieces. Yum!
